Aaron Eden had run away from a foster home where he had been continually abused, to find his half brother, who his mother had described to him before her death in a train accident, four years previously. Aaron had arrived in Fox Flat, purely by accident and had gone into the cafe to buy a feed. Having used his last five dollars, he took the opportunity of picking up a wallet left on the table and was seen by the cafe proprietor.

The Dark Wolf and the Cub's short stories are written by Dark Wolf, a sixteen year old werewolf, who has been adopted by Rob and Anne. The stories themselves deal with the interaction of the character Dark Wolf with a group of young people that belong to a military based youth group, or two or more members of that group. The boy's own story and how he meets Rob, precedes the four short stories.

The story opens with a young man feeling pissed of with the world, due to the actions of some staff members of the youth group he belongs to. Shaun a 17 year old youth group member attending a Bush activity had been picked on all the Queens Birthday long weekend by all but one leader, his friend and mentor, who coincidentally uses the radio call sign of Warlock. Shaun wandered away from the main campsite in disgust at the way he was treated, when the youth group members leave the activity area to return to their Squadron Headquarters Shaun is left behind.

The main character of novel "The Enigma" is Mitchell Roberts, who started of life as Paul Simmons. The boy, who was good looking, was not shown any love growing up and therefore he had difficulty in showing his true feelings, for fear that they would be misconstrued. Paul's mother had an affair with an American pilot and found that she was pregnant.
