Through the Portal is part of a series, the second book will be called 'The Dark Elves'.

The story opens with a young man feeling pissed of with the world, due to the actions of some staff members of the youth group he belongs to. Shaun a 17 year old youth group member attending a Bush activity had been picked on all the Queens Birthday long weekend by all but one leader, his friend and mentor, who coincidentally uses the radio call sign of Warlock. Shaun wandered away from the main campsite in disgust at the way he was treated, when the youth group members leave the activity area to return to their Squadron Headquarters Shaun is left behind.

Once the bus returns to the youth group's buildings, there is pandemonium with all the leaders and senior youth members blaming each other for Shaun's disappearance . Shaun's father is not impressed and after reporting the boys' disappearance to the police, he rings the warlock who agrees to look for Shaun.

Warlock travels to the activity area and calling on his assistants, two identical twin demons he starts to search for Shaun. He is visited at the camp site by the senior youth group leader and the leader that had caused Shaun to leave the activity area in disgust. The leader Nesbit meets the demons and the warlock an experience that gives him a fright and causes him to lie to the local police, who after Nesbit's visit think that the warlock has raped and killed Shaun burying the body in the forest.

Shaun whilst walking deeper into the forest has stopped for a smoke and in the clearing in front of him he sees a portal form. Being inquisitive' the boy enters the opening and is transported to a world that is a mirror of Earth but some 1505 years in the past.

Exiting the portal on a bright sunny day Shaun finds himself in a world where regicide, dark magic, werewolves, dragons and other fearsome creatures abound. Shaun's arrival does not go unnoticed and he is seen by the Seer of Dark Dread castle that tells the cruel and evil Lord, that the arrival of Shaun spells the lords demise, as the warlock will no doubt follow Shaun to Dark Dale and punish the lord for his part in the death of the warlock's wife and son, which his lordship ordered.

Shaun saves a young girl from being raped by a dark creature and he takes a liking to her and her younger brother. Shaun meets the girls family and whilst staying with them amazes them with his magical apparatus from the future.

In the year 2006 warlock has finally found where Shaun has gone to and makes plans to follow the boy accompanied by his younger brother a werewolf and his brothers mate a blonde werewolf. The party arrive at the other end of the portal in Dark Dale just in time to save two women from the lizard men guards looking for Shaun.

Once the warlock returns to the tower of his birth he starts a mighty conjuration, which results in a spectacular storm, to summon the Lord of the Dead to bargain for the return of his son Jacks soul as he wishes to return his son to life.

Those at the castle plot to destroy the warlock and friends with an army of dark trolls. Warlock is warned and he summons an old and dear friend to assist in the destruction of the trolls. The Lord of the Dead allows the dead and decomposing army of Gadalphus, which was slain by trolls, to be awakened to assist in stopping the troll advance.

The trolls are defeated by the dead army and the legendary Drax the Black dragon, who on returning to the warlock's tower meets Shaun and creates him a Dragon Lord, thus allowing Shaun to ride the dragon when warlock attacks the castle. The castle is attacked and the lord is slain. Warlock appoints the rightful heir to the castle and subsequently the new prince appoints Shaun as his special investigator. Warlock gives Shaun a powerful sword called Death Dealer and a jet black blue eyed stallion named Destroyer.

Shaun's first investigation is finding two missing young men from a village in the mountains. During the course of the investigation Shaun finds and releases a golden dragon named Bronze. Shaun finds the missing young men and returns them to the village where he sees the village elder and the black smith stoning his assistant Ajax and a boy named Allen. Shaun's anger is something to behold and he meets out swift justice on the culprits.

Shaun investigates the hiding places of two vampires which lead him and the warlock to a village that has been taken over by thieves, mercenaries and slavers. These are dispatched by various means and the village returned back to the people. The warlock and Shaun go to the vampires hiding place to destroy the abominations, but are too late as the coffins have been moved to another location.

Book one ends at this point and the search for the vampires and other adventures of the Dragon Lord will continue in Book Two.
